Botox and Fillers Q & A

What are Facial Fillers?

To rejuvenate skin, plump lips, minimize wrinkles, lessen scar depressions, and replace volume lost in the facial soft tissues, dermatologists use facial fillers. These are cosmetic products which are made up of chemicals such as calcium hydroxyl apatite, hyaluronic acid, and collagen. These products are used for an array of cosmetic concerns but typically the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles. Depending on the product, they can provide either temporary or long-lasting results and they all work through small injections. These products “fill in” creases and lines of the face which have been depleted of fat and collagen. Sculptra®, Radiesse®, Restylane®, and Juvéderm® are examples of facial fillers.

What is Botox®?

Botox® is a cosmetic treatment crafted to assist with minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, especially frown lines between the brows and crow’s feet. The continued use of muscles in our face that make us squint and frown cause the skin to crease and fold. Botox® cosmetic injections will minimize muscle activity for a short period of time which creates a visible change in the signs of aging in the skin of the face. Botox® works beneath the skin’s surface to target these muscles which make our skin crease. Botox® is one of the only cosmetic treatments for wrinkle reduction which has been researched by medical experts. Over 50 countries throughout the world employ this treatment for cosmetic use.

How Long will the Procedure Take?

Generally speaking, the facial filler and Botox® procedures will take roughly 10 to 20 minutes. The exact time required will depend on the person’s skin, the size of the crease(s), and how many areas are being treated. If the patient is treating only a small number of wrinkles or concerns, the time frame will be much shorter. A number of small injections will be made under the skin’s surface during the procedure. The type of medication used and how many injections are required will be determined by the type of product being used and the depth of the wrinkle or imperfection.
