Chemical Peels Q & A

What are chemical peels?

Chemical peels are treatments that use special solutions applied to the skin for a specific period of time to help reduce or eliminate the appearance of wrinkles, lines, sun damage and acne scars, while stimulating the natural production of collagen so skin continues to look more youthful and firmer over time. Peels can be used on the face, chest, back, neck and hands, and they can vary in their effects, ranging from mild to deep, depending on the type of solution used and the amount of time the solution remains on your skin.

What types of skin conditions do chemical peels treat?

Chemical peels are very versatile and can be used to treat an array of issues, including:

  • uneven skin tone and discolored spots, including age spots and melasma

  • acne scars and other mild scars

  • freckling and other uneven pigmentation

  • sun damage

  • fine lines and wrinkles

  • uneven or rough texture

What happens during a light chemical peel?

Light chemical peels are especially popular because they can be used to treat many conditions without significantly disrupting your normal routine. During treatment, your skin is gently cleansed and the special solution is applied and left on your skin for a specific period of time before being washed away. While the solution is on your skin, you may feel some mild tingling as the upper layers are gently loosened so they can be sloughed off, revealing smoother skin beneath. Most treatments take about 15 to 20 minutes, and there's no need for anesthesia, so you can go back to your regular activities right after treatment. Most patients benefit from four to six treatments spaced a few weeks apart. Skin can be cared for in between treatments with a vitamin A cream or other cosmeceutical to help ensure you enjoy optimal results.
