Kybella® Q & A

What is Kybella®?

Kybella® is an injection made up of deoxycholic acid and is the first FDA-approved injectable treatment which can contour and improve the appearance of submental fullness, more commonly referred to as a double chin. Patients will work with the doctor to design a treatment program which will be tailored to help patients improve their chin’s profile. During the treatment sessions, the doctor will inject Kybella® into the fat under the chin. There will be multiple injections made. Many patients experience noticeable results within 2 to 4 treatments. Up to 6 treatment sessions can be performed and should be spaced no less than a month apart from each other.

How Does Kybella® Work?

The active ingredient in Kybella® is deoxycholic acid. This is a naturally-occurring molecule in the body which assists with the absorption and breakdown of dietary fat. When the medication is injected into the fat underneath the chin, Kybella® destroys the fat cells located there. Once destroyed, the cells can no longer store or absorb fat.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Patients will work with the doctor to tailor the Kybella® treatment program, including how many injections will be administered. This will be based on the patient’s current and desired chin profile. Many patients can see results after the typical 2 to 4 treatments. If the patient desire dramatic change more treatments may be necessary. The doctor will advice him or her on how many sessions and injections will be used to accomplish the results.

How Long Will the Results Last?

When injected into the fat beneath a person’s chin, Kybella® terminates those fat cells. This means that they are dead and they will not regenerate. After the the physical result is achieved, administering the Kybella® injections again is typically not required.
