Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Q & A

What is Platelet Rich Plasma therapy?

Platelet rich plasma, or PRP, is a rejuvenation medicine treatment, in which a specially processed substance derived from a patient’s own blood is used to stimulate new hair growth. This is a simple office procedure suitable for both men and women. It entails extracting a small amount of blood from the patient and spinning it at a high speed in a machine called a centrifuge. This process is used to create a substance that is substantially more concentrated in healing platelets and growth proteins than normal blood. The substance is then injected into the thinning or bald areas of the scalp. Doing so results in thickening hair follicles and improving hair density. It can be used as a stand-alone treatment or in combination with hair restoration surgery.

What can I expect when undergoing PRP treatment?

The PRP is injected with a syringe and massaged across the scalp to create microscopic channels that allow the PRP to penetrate and stimulate the hair follicles beneath. Treatment takes about 390 minutes and generally does not require any downtime. Most patients resume their daily routine immediately afterward and can shampoo and condition their hair the same day.

What kind of results can I expect?

Individual results vary, as with any treatment. Often times, 2-3 treatments are needed in addition to a follow-up consultation after 8-12 months to measure efficacy. However, the majority of our patients have enjoyed significantly noticeable improvement after 2-6 treatments. Maintenance treatments will likely be needed in the future for overall upkeep. PRP is still relatively new and up to date, only one major study has been published, but those findings are extremely positive. According to the study, when used in conjunction with follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplantation, all 20 patients who were given PRP experienced a 75% increase in hair growth after 6 months, compared to only 4 of those who did not receive PRP with their FUE procedure.
